Programs
The Wellness Community provides professionally led programs of support to people with cancer and their loved ones no matter what kind of cancer or where they are on their cancer journey.  All programs at The Wellness community are provided at no cost to the participant.  At the Wellness Community, you can choose to participate in a variety of programs designed to help you earn more about cancer and its treatment. You can also connect with and learn from others as you face cancer together. We have free educational programs and materials, support groups, exercise, stress reduction and nutrition classes. The Wellness Community is committed to evidence-based programming and keeps abreast of the latest in the field of psychosocial oncology. Our programs are based on valid scientific research and are continually being updated.

Welcome
Our orientations are called Welcome to Wellness. Welcome meetings are one hour meetings held twice each week and do not require preregistration to attend; just drop in on any Tuesday morning at 11:00 am or Thursday evening at 7:00 pm.

Welcome to Wellness meetings are led by a cancer survivor who has “graduated” from one of our support groups. They remember what it was like to walk through the doors of The Wellness Community for the first time, and they can share with newcomers how our programs work and how to get involved.

All are welcome to attend a Welcome to Wellness meeting: patients, caregivers, family, friends, anyone who wants to learn more about the programs and services available at The Wellness Community.

Support Groups
Support groups are the heart of The Wellness Community. Learn from others, be inspired, ask the hard questions, share your feelings, all in a safe environment with other people dealing with cancer who really “get it.” Being in a support group helps reduce anxiety and fear, helps restore hope, and reduces feeling alone. Often times even your closest friends and family may not truly understand what you are going through; your group members will.

Patient Groups for those with a recent cancer diagnosis or treatment in the past 18 months
Support Person Groups for those with a loved one with cancer (These groups require attendance at a Welcome to Wellness session and a brief interview prior to group assignment).
Bereavement Groups for those who have lost a loved one to cancer (Welcome to Wellness not required, please call for brief interview before group assignment).
Drop-in Groups generally meet once a month. (Welcome to Wellness or interview not required).
Survivorship Group for those who have graduated from their patient group, or, those who have completed treatment, are in remission, are cancer free, or are on long-term maintenance medication.
Men’s Group for men at any stage of the cancer journey.
African American Women’s Support Group for African American women at any stage of cancer
Spanish Family Group for Spanish-speaking patients and caregivers.

Other support groups in Spanish, Korean, and Chinese are available as noted on the calendar, or call for current information.

Mind-Body

Reducing the stress of dealing with cancer is one of the most important things you can do to improve the quality of your life. Whether you are a patient or a caregiver, you can participate in our fitness, meditation, yoga, Tai Chi, visualization/guided imagery, Qi Gong and other stress reducing classes. Mind-Body techniques for stress reduction are a form of "complementary medicine." A rapidly growing body of research tells us that mind-body practices can reduce stress and anxiety, and may improve one's immune response. These practices can help improve your quality of life and help you manage side effects, which may in turn help keep you on your treatment schedule, and perhaps increase your opportunity for a longer and stronger life after cancer.
