  • Residual Gift (what is left after all other bequests are fulfilled) I give to The Wellness Community-Foothills, a non-profit corporation, located in Pasadena, California, the rest and residue of my estate (or a percentage of the rest and residue of my estate) to be used for the benefit of The Wellness Community-Foothills.

A gift by will or trust to The Wellness Community-Foothills may be given for the general unrestricted use of the agency or may be restricted for a particular purpose. If you wish to restrict your bequest for a specific purpose, it is best to review your intentions with TWC-F officials at the time the bequest provision is drafted to be certain that your wishes can be carried out.

Your gift may be given in your name, or to memorialize another person you designate, and your generosity will be commemorated in perpetuity on a special plaque in The Wellness Community-Foothills Living Room.

Support Craig's Cancer Journey and TWC-F! PDF Print
On June 5, 2008, I was diagnosed with GE junction (gastro-esophageal) cancer. After choosing City of Hope for my treatments, I began a grueling chemotherapy, which then segued to a 9-hour surgical procedure. Despite all the chemo, the cancer was at Stage 4, and, following surgery I began a five week, five day a week radiation therapy, followed up by another three month return excursion into chemotherapy. I ended treatments in April 2009.

Most of you who are reading this are well aware of what I went through, and your love and support has meant the world to me. Following my diagnosis, a friend and cancer survivor put me in touch with the Foothills chapter of The Wellness Community, or TWC-F. The Wellness Community offers cancer treatments of a sort different from those available at City of Hope. TWC-F is place where fears, tears and laughter can flow freely, where emotional support knows no boundaries, and where information from staff, patients, and caregivers alike helps to bolster hope and positive thinking. TWC-F provides an amazing number of classes, workshops, and support groups, for both patients and caregivers. All of it is free. But the recent financial crunch has hit non-profits first and hardest; not too long ago, TWC-F was forced to cut back the number of classes and services it offers.

After my treatments ended, my surgeon emphatically ordered me to the gym because, he told me, physical fitness is a critical element in cancer prevention. Strenuous exercise daily is the best way to keep the kind of cancer I had at bay. I took him very, very seriously.

I joined the local YMCA. Not long after that, I met triathlon coach Mary Kane and began attending her twice weekly boot camps which involve strength training, cycling, running and swimming. My favorite triathalon sport is cycling and I’ve taken to it with a passion. To spur my cycling progress, I set a goal for myself and registered for the Solvang Century Ride on March 13th. It is a 100-mile ride through the hills in and around Solvang. There is no doubt that I will finish the ride. I want to celebrate my cycling prowess to promote the truth that cancer survivors not only survive, but thrive. I also want to use the ride as a means of singing the praises of The Wellness Community-Foothills and as a means of raising money for TWC-F.

Along with City of Hope, TWC-F played a huge role in my journey along the road of cancer diagnosis and survival. As a way of supporting me during my 100-mile ride, please donate what you can to The Wellness Community so that their doors will always be open, and their services always free.

Thank you,
Craig Pettigrew
