About The Wellness Community - Foothills |
The mission of The Wellness Community is to help people affected by cancer enhance their health and well-being through participation in a professional program of emotional support, education and hope. The Wellness Community provides professionally led programs of support to people with cancer and their loved ones no matter what kind of cancer or where they are on their cancer journey. At the Wellness Community, you can choose to participate in a variety of programs designed to help you learn more about cancer and its treatment. You can also connect with and learn from others as you face cancer together.
The first step, attending a Welcome to Wellness orientation, is led by a cancer survivor. This meeting is open to people with cancer, family members and friends and will provide you with an overview of The Wellness Community programs of educational programs, support groups, exercise, stress reduction and nutrition classes, resource library and social activities. The Wellness Community believes that participation in our programs can be a meaningful part of your physical, and emotional recovery from cancer, regardless of the stage or extent of your illness, or whether you are a survivor or a caregiver. |

The Wellness Community, founded by Dr. Harold Benjamin in 1982, is an international non-profit organization dedicated to providing free support, cancer education and hope. Through participation in professionally-led support groups, educational workshops, nutrition and exercise programs, and stress-reduction classes, cancer patients and their loved ones can learn vital skills that enable them to regain control, reduce isolation and restore hope.
Dr. Benjamin formulated the Patient Active Concept, the foundation of the Wellness Community, as a result of experience with his wife's breast cancer and through subsequent years of study on the psychological and social impact of cancer. This revolutionary idea was recognized years later at Walt Disney World EPCOT Metropolitan Life exhibit as one of the most significant developments in the evolution of modern health care. The validity of TWC core principal is further supported through evidence-based research.
The other significant cornerstone of our program is that all services are provided free of charge in a home-like, community setting. 'Community' is perhaps the most important aspect of The Wellness Community model of care that differentiates the program from any other. Today, thousands of people with cancer and their loved ones unite together through our programs. People at all stages of the disease come to learn they are not alone in their fight--whether for physical, emotional or spiritual recovery. Together, they regain a sense of control over their lives and ultimately discover that hope is a valuable tool irrespective of the stage of disease.
From Dr. Benjamin's Wellness Community has grown to provide support, education and hope for people with cancer at over 100 locations worldwide including 24 U.S. based and 2 international centers with 73 satellite and off-site programs and online at The Virtual Wellness Community. In addition, The Wellness Community has two facilities abroad in Tel Aviv, Israel and Tokyo, Japan, as well as The Virtual Wellness Community via the Internet. The Wellness Community. A significant factor in expansion can be directly attributed to Gilda Radner, a participant at TWC until her death from ovarian cancer in 1989. In her book, It's Always Something, she shared extensively about her experience at The Wellness Community. Many patients who have read her book have gone on to help bring a facility to their area.

Volunteers
At the heart of The Wellness Community are our volunteers. At TWC-Foothills, there is a vibrant network of people united in creating a better quality of life for people affected by cancer and their loved ones. The Wellness Community illustrates the extraordinary power of a group. Whether you volunteer once a week, once a month, or once a year, your contribution of time helps underwrite the cost of services to meet the ever increasing needs of people affected by cancer.
The Wellness Community’s 'Culture of Giving Back'. Our volunteers, along with voluntary contributions from those who participate in programs, friends in the neighborhood, local corporations, and foundation grants help ensure services are available to those affected by cancer.
